Scaling For Screen & Print

Summary
An important part of the control of your Gantt chart is its horizontal time-scaling. The program provides assistance here in several ways, some of which are designed for the screen and others for hardcopy print.

THE ZOOM BUTTONS
This is quick but difficult to control precisely. The zoom buttons are maginifying glass buttons with a plus and minus inside of them. You will find them on the right hand side of the Standard Toolbar. Play with them to see their function.

VIEW - ZOOM
An alternative to buttons is"View - Zoom" where several scaling options are provided. The best being 'Entire Project'. This will fit the whole span of Gantt bars into whaterver window you have allowed for the Gantt chart.

This option is not dynamic. If you modify the proportion of the screen devoted to the Gantt chart, you will need to repeat the operation.

USING THE TIMESCALE

  • Choose "Format - Timescale".

This option allows you to select the units and labels for the major and minor scales. It is usually best to choose time units on the minor scale that divide exactly into those for the major one. Thus rather choose 1 week and 4 weeks for them respectively rather than 1 week and 1 month. Often it is best to dispense completely with the minor scale.

  • Choose 'none'.

At the lower left of the dialog box you will find a size factor. This can be used for fine-tuning the scale and is particularly useful for printing where the automatic "entire project" zooming (discussedin "zoom Buttons"} does not apply.

To prevent the right end of the Gantt chart falling onto the next page:

  • Disable the automatic timescale fitting by seleciting "File - Page Setup",
  • choose the 'View' tab
  • Clear the 'Fit Timescale to End of Page'.

Finally fine-tune your scaling on the Gantt chart view, and then repeately perform a print preview ("File - Print Preview") until you are happy with the results.
